Editing

Copyediting, also known as line editing, comprises mechanical editing and substantive editing:

Mechanical editing: checking for capitalization, spelling, hyphenation, punctuation, use of abbreviations, basic grammar, syntax, and usage.

Substantive editing: basic organization and presentation of content, rephrasing for flow or clarity, checking for style (house style, jargon, within industry/subject area); not as rigorous as developmental editing.

Developmental editing (sometimes called content editing) is usually done before a manuscript is submitted to a publisher. A developmental editor (DE) considers all the details of a manuscript and how they contribute to the work's overall intent.

The glut of submissions requires that literary agents put most proposals aside if manuscripts are not already shipshape, so authors do well to consider hiring a developmental editor on their own before shopping a proposal around to agents.

-Scott Norton from Developmental Editing

For nonfiction, developmental editing examines the presentation and support of the theme, the appropriateness of the writing style (businesslike, informal, etc.), and the pace and balance of subject areas to ensure the manuscript clearly conveys the author's message.

In fiction, characters and plot are the two main areas in which developmental editing has the most impact. Regarding the former, the DE looks at the integrity, actions, and dialogue of the characters. For plot, the DE considers the flow and pacing, the delivery of the essential story, plot twists (if applicable), and other aspects.

Proofreading usually comes after copyediting and involves reading printers' proofs or typeset copy against original text to detect and mark errors to be corrected.
